He had been severely critical of the pope, questioning the validity of some of the sacraments and denouncing church corruption. An archbishop was given the job of examining Luther and asked him, \u201cMartin, how can you assume that you are the only one to understand the sense of Scripture? You have no right to call into question the most holy orthodox faith. I ask you, Martin, do you or do you not repudiate your books and the errors which they contain?\u201d Luther responded:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cUnless I am convinced of error by the testimony of Scripture or by manifest reasoning, I stand convinced by the Scriptures to which I have appealed, and my conscience is taken captive by God's word, I cannot and will not recant anything, for to act against our conscience is neither safe for us nor open to us. <strong><em>Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me. Amen.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Author Eric Metaxas says,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen Luther made it clear that he feared God\u2019s judgment more than the judgment of the powerful figures in that room, he electrified the world. How dare anyone, much less a mere monk, imply there could be any difference between them?\u00a0 Since time immemorial, such men had spoken for God and the state. But Luther defied them, humbly but boldly, in a watershed moment in world history.\u201d<sup>2 <\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This April will mark the 500<sup>th<\/sup> year since Luther uttered those words, which labeled him a heretic and criminal. Yet myriads of people have since taken up the position Luther courageously defended, declaring <strong>\u201cthe Word of God the single source of doctrine and the only infallible guide to salvation.<\/strong>\u201d<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>IPHC Men\u2019s Ministries\u2019 theme this year derives from Luther\u2019s words, \u201cHere I Stand.\u201d Our theme verse extols the courage Luther demonstrated in his historic stand. After declaring in eloquent terms, the resurrection of Christ, the Apostle Paul admonishes us in 1 Corinthians 15:58:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cTherefore, my dear brothers and sisters, <strong><em>stand firm<\/em><\/strong>. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.\u201d<sup>4<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>The great need of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century is men who will stand firm, \u201crejecting passivity, accepting responsibility, leading courageously, and expecting the greater reward, God\u2019s reward.\u201d<sup>5<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-7803-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style ingpb-standard-row\" ><div data-full-row=\"yes\" class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-7803-2\" ><div id=\"pgc-7803-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-7803-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3><strong>Here I Stand...In The Faith<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Apostle Paul admonishes us in 1 Corinthians 16:13, \u201cBe on guard.\u00a0 <strong>Stand firm in the faith.<\/strong> Be courageous. Be strong.\u201d<sup>6 <\/sup>It is imperative men know what and why they believe.\u00a0 Today's culture preaches relativism and intolerance for anyone suggesting there is an absolute authority governing the universe. <a href=\"https:\/\/iphc.org\/discipleship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/02\/7-Mens-needs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7804 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/iphc.org\/discipleship\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2021\/02\/7-Mens-needs.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"571\" height=\"321\" \/><\/a>It is counter-cultural to declare that certain things are true for everyone, that doctrine matters, and that God gave us a set of objective truths rooted in who He is and not what we think or have experienced. Everything else in our lives flows from what we believe. Therefore, the declaration from authentic godly men today must be no less decisive and firm as that of Luther and the Reformers: \u201cHere I stand!\u201d In 2021, Men\u2019s Ministries will address no less than seven must-believes for men who sincerely desire deep roots grounded firmly in the faith.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-7803-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style ingpb-standard-row\" ><div data-full-row=\"yes\" class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-7803-3\" ><div id=\"pgc-7803-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-7803-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h3><strong>Here I Stand...In The Fight<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Ephesians 6:10-14a exhorts us:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cFinally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, <strong><em>that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.<\/em><\/strong> For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, take up the whole armor of God<strong><em>, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day<\/em><\/strong>, and having done all, to stand. <strong><em>Stand therefore<\/em><\/strong> . . .<sup>7<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A godly man is someone who chooses not just to survive life based upon the world\u2019s standards, merely hoping for something better to come along. Instead, a godly man decides to live a thriving life despite the circumstances around him. Often, men fail because they did not know, or understand, how to fight correctly. \u201cThe reality is a spiritual battle is raging all around you. A battle that men are constantly undermining, discounting, or even ignoring. Jesus tells us in John 10:10 that the devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He is actively attempting to thwart even your best-laid plans. And like Jesus, in Matthew 3, it is important you prepare yourself for the battle ahead.\u201d<sup>8<\/sup><\/p>\n<h4>Men\u2019s Ministries will teach, train, and resource men in 2021 to not only show up for the battle but will equip men in how to fight the good fight of faith in the power of Jesus\u2019 name and the strength of the Holy Spirit. \u201cGreater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.\u201d<sup>9<\/sup><\/h4>\n<h3><strong>Here I Stand...In The Family<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A real man engages the battle within and stands in the gap for his family, wife, children, and grandchildren. Too often, men end up fighting with their family rather than fighting for their family. Men\u2019s Ministries, in collaboration with Discipleship Ministries, will seek to equip men to be warriors standing in the family, rather than wimps who abandon the family.\u00a0 A father-absent culture is pulling our society apart at the very core of its being, causing a fatherless epidemic. Hence, 2021 will offer resources focused on strengthening the bond between husband and wife, parent and child, and the family as a missional extension of the larger body of Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Nehemiah, threatened by sinister forces of destruction, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI placed armed guards behind the lowest parts of the wall in the exposed areas. I stationed the people to <strong><em>stand guard by families<\/em><\/strong>, armed with swords, spears, and bows. As I looked over the situation, I called together the nobles and the rest of the people and said to them, \u2018Don\u2019t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and <strong><em>fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes<\/em><\/strong>!\u2019\u201d<sup>10<\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We will remind men our great and glorious God has made us \u201cmore than conquerors through Christ, who loved us\u201d (Romans 8:37).<sup>11<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Here I Stand!<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cHere I Stand\u201d is a clarion call to stand firm in the faith, in the fight, and in the family. It is not a call to isolation as a lone ranger going it alone. Instead, it is a call to stand in solidarity with a band of brothers whose hearts God has touched (1 Samuel 10:26).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cStand up, stand up, for Jesus, Ye soldiers of the cross;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Lift high His royal banner, It must not suffer loss:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">From victory unto victory, His army shall He Mr. W. A. Mills, Jr. served for 32 years as a pastor in the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, including 12 years in North Carolina and 21 years in Buena Vista, Virginia. W. A. has preached in camp meetings, revivals, men\u2019s conferences, and pastors\u2019 conferences within and outside the IPHC. He is as a member of the Appalachian Conference where he served one term as an executive council member. W. A. serves as vice-chairman of the Board of Trustees of Holmes Bible College in Greenville, SC.<\/p>\n<p>Having served 12 years on the General Men\u2019s Ministries Board, prior to his appointment as General Director of Men\u2019s Ministries in February 2018, W. A. assumed office on July 1, 2018 following the retirement of Rev. Bill C. Terry. He now makes his home in Oklahoma City. W. A.\u2019s passion is to lead men in becoming authentic men who in the words of Robert Lewis, \u201creject passivity, accept responsibility, lead courageously, and expect the greater reward, God\u2019s reward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Widowed in April of 2016, W. A. is the proud father of three young adult children, Rachel, married to David Wilson, Tre married to Megan Amato Mills, and Hannah Nicole Mills. W.
