Recently I was in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, for a meeting. While there I visited the Henry Ford Museum and discovered an amazing display of historical artifacts. One of those, pictured on the next page, is the chair that President Abraham Lincoln was sitting in on the night of April 14, 1865, when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. He was the first President of the United States to be assassinated.<\/p>\n
The Civil War that dominated Lincoln\u2019s tenure, and his death just days after the surrender of Robert E. Lee\u2019s army at Appomattox, Virginia, strongly marked multiple generations in various ways for over a hundred years. One might argue that in some ways our nation continues to be marked by both events and the various levels of meaning.<\/p>\n
One of those levels of ongoing meaning from that period of American history was remembered earlier this month. It was fifty years ago that the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated at a motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on the early evening of April 4, 1968. Like many people in the United States my age, we remember where we were when we heard the news of King\u2019s assassination, much like our memories of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.<\/p>\n
Each generation has defining events. My parents remembered where they were as young adults when they learned of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7, 1941.
\nToday, there is a whole generation whose defining memories are of September 11, 2001, and the attacks by an Islamic terrorist group against the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, and the crash of United Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n
It is a human characteristic to remember significant events. We remember birthdays, wedding anniversaries, the death of a loved one and the major events of our times.
\nIn the Bible much emphasis is placed on \u201cremembrance, memory and memorial.\u201d I think of Genesis 9:15 when God said He \u201cwill remember (His) covenant\u201d with the sign of the rainbow. Also, God called the Passover meal a \u201cmemorial\u201d in Exodus 12:14.<\/p>\n
Malachi 3:16 refers to \u201ca book of remembrance\u201d for those who fear the Lord. At His final supper, Jesus instructed His followers to eat and drink of His blood and body \u201cin remembrance of Me\u201d (Luke 22:19).<\/p>\n
Jesus, in John 14:26, described one of the functions of the Holy Spirit as aiding in memory. He said: \u201cBut the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among His purposes, the Holy Spirit serves as a teacher who gives knowledge, instruction and content, and who leads us to the understanding and application of what has been taught. A teacher gives someone the necessary tools to continue life-long learning.<\/p>\n
The Holy Spirit also serves to stir the memory of what has been previously stored. In modern language, the Holy Spirit is the ultimate \u201csearch engine.\u201d Google and Siri don\u2019t even come close to the memory power of the third person of the Godhead!<\/p>\n
This means that the function of memory is not solely about the past; rather, it is the past brought into the present for the shaping of a future known by God. The Holy Spirit does this work personally and corporately among us through the testimony of the Bible, through the great cloud of witnesses through the ages whose stories inspire us, through the sharing of faith that occurs among believers in the various forms of congregational life and through the manifestation of spiritual gifts.<\/p>\n
The issue of memory is important as we reflect on \u201chanding down\u201d the faith from generation to generation. It\u2019s like taking a football and \u201chanding it off\u201d to the next person. 1 Corinthians 15:3 describes \u201cdelivering,\u201d or \u201chanding over\u201d something to someone else. Jude 3 uses the same expression, \u201cexhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s what we do as followers of Jesus! We \u201chand off\u201d the faith to one another and each generation. You cannot \u201chand over\u201d what you have forgotten! Let\u2019s remember to do the important things that Jesus has commanded us to do: love, evangelize, disciple, forgive, serve, and worship.<\/p>\n

Como estudiante de historia, me agrada leer sobre los per\u00edodos conocidos y menos conocidos de las acciones de Dios en el mundo. Uno de los libros que estoy leyendo es Constantine and the Bishops: The Politics of Intolerance, de HA Drake (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002). Estoy aprendiendo mucho leyendo esto: los matices de la edad y los conflictos que han dado forma a gran parte de nuestro mundo, la interacci\u00f3n din\u00e1mica de los poderes espirituales y terrenales, los peligros de simplificar demasiado la historia de la iglesia, una apreciaci\u00f3n de que el mismo Esp\u00edritu Santo en nuestras vidas hoy estaba en el trabajo en sus vidas hace 1,700 a\u00f1os. Un libro como este me recuerda que Jesucristo realmente es \"el mismo ayer\". Pero tambi\u00e9n soy muy consciente de que Jes\u00fas es \"el mismo hoy\". A finales de enero, el Comit\u00e9 Ejecutivo de IPHC se reuni\u00f3 en nuestro hogar para recibir luz cena y oraci\u00f3n Oramos por la IPHC, por el mundo, por los dem\u00e1s. El Obispo McGhee, cuyo departamento de Ministerios de Discipulado ahora lidera gran parte de nuestro \u00e9nfasis en el valor central de \"Todas las Generaciones\", observ\u00f3 que los cuatro miembros del comit\u00e9 ejecutivo eran todos hijos de pastores y predicadores de IPHC. Recientemente estuve en Argentina para un evento organizado por The Awakening. Varios centenares de j\u00f3venes l\u00edderes adultos de toda Am\u00e9rica Latina se reunieron para reunirse, recibir mentores y crecer en la Palabra y la oraci\u00f3n. Mientras los ve\u00eda buscar fervorosamente a Dios en los altares, estaba muy agradecido por estos hombres y mujeres que ahora sirven a Cristo y servir\u00e1n en un futuro que trasciende mi tiempo en esta tierra. \u00a1Su tiempo no trascender\u00e1 el tiempo de Jes\u00fas! Sabemos que el Hijo de Dios, la Palabra Viviente, la segunda persona de la Deidad, ha existido por toda la eternidad. Jes\u00fas es el Alfa y la Omega, el principio y el fin de los prop\u00f3sitos redentores del Padre, el Hijo y el Esp\u00edritu Santo. Como Aquel que \"es el mismo ayer, hoy y por siempre\", \u00c9l trasciende el tiempo, pero se manifiesta en el tiempo. \u00a1Jes\u00fas, que estuvo presente en los primeros siglos cristianos, que est\u00e1 presente con nosotros ahora, estar\u00e1 presente en el ma\u00f1ana mientras esperamos su regreso!
