Poetry is essential.<\/p>\n

Not in the sense that we must have it to survive (although an argument can be made for that), but in the sense that poetry can distill feelings like despair and joy, pain and rapture down to their very essence. It\u2019s the difference between a diamond mine and a diamond. Chris Maxwell\u2019s other books are like mines. Gems can be found hiding inside; an insight, a twist of phrase or a sudden observation that makes us feel like we\u2019re peering through his eyes rather than reading words on a page. We voluntarily become lost inside the mine, discovering a few diamonds \"\"<\/a>along the way.<\/p>\n

A Slow and Sudden God<\/em> is a collection of gems, mined over four decades. This forty-year journey\u00a0has seen some wilderness; encephalitis, epilepsy, losing loved ones too soon, but the journey has also seen deliverance, joy, and provision; love, children, friends, fans and a God who sees and responds, both slow and sudden.<\/p>\n

Chris distills his private thoughts, unique struggles, questions and experience and pours it out for us, like water into a basin. If we peer closely enough into the basin we can see our most intimate thoughts, struggles, questions and experience, mirrored in his poems and know that we are not alone in the world, that our pain, our questions, our fears and joys are shared. Poetry is about life. It is experience distilled. But more than that, it can tell the story of how, even with some scars, we can become re-born out of the experience.
