Holiness is at the core of our relationship with God. Psalm 96:9 says: \u201cOh worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth\u201d (NKJV).<\/p>\n

The IPHC has chosen to focus this year on \u201cThe Beauty of Holiness.\u201d From Scripture we discover God\u2019s holiness, how God makes us holy, what it means for us to be holy and how holy people share God\u2019s love in this world.<\/p>\n

The IPHC was birthed in 1898 as part of a holiness revival that swept the world. That revival emphasized God\u2019s holiness and His command and provision\u2014because He provides the ability for us to \u201cbe holy, as I (God) am holy\u201d (see Leviticus 11:44, 45; 19:2; 20:7, 26; 1 Peter 1:16).<\/p>\n

That emphasis included the command that we personally live holy lives reflecting the character of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:4; Colossians 1:22; 3:12; 1 Thessalonians<\/p>\n

4:3, 4; 2 Timothy 1:9; 1 Peter 1:15). It also included the command that the church, the Body of Christ in the world, live holy as a light to the nations (Deuteronomy 7:6; 14:2, 21; 26:19; 28:9; 1 Peter 1:16).<\/p>\n

Our movement was birthed in the Wesleyan holiness perspective of Christian theology. John Wesley\u2019s A Plain Account of Christian Perfection<\/em>, as well as the insights from those who followed him, is how we have historically viewed holiness in the Scriptures.<\/p>\n

Wesleyan holiness provides us with a two-fold\u00a0work of grace through Christ\u2019s redeeming blood. First, in pardon of sin, the guilt we carry for our actual sins are forgiven through Christ. We receive this gift of pardon and justification by faith. We do not earn forgiveness of sins; rather we receive by faith what Christ as provided for us in His death and resurrection.<\/p>\n

Second, though we are forgiven of our actual past sins, there often remains a war between our new birth nature and our carnal, fallen nature. IPHC theologians have consistently interpreted Romans 7 as the Apostle Paul\u2019s description of the believer\u2019s struggle in the flesh following conversion. Victory over our fallen\u00a0nature comes as we fully surrender our will, thoughts, and desires to Christ, and receive by faith the gift of sanctification provided in Jesus Christ (Romans 6\u20138).<\/p>\n

This is how we experience deliverance from the bondage of sin and its addictions that so easily ensnare us (Hebrews 12:1). This is the hope and joy of our present life: Though we experience temptations\u00a0of varying degrees that seek to have dominion over us, Christ has provided the way for us to resist sinful dominion and live under His righteous and holy dominion (Romans 6:11\u201322).<\/p>\n

The IPHC Articles of Faith 9 and 10 state our position on sanctification. The phrase, \u201csecond definite, instantaneous work of grace,\u201d refers to God\u2019s grace in Christ that brings victory over our carnal nature. While this can occur at pardon and justification, it often occurs later\u00a0in our walk with Christ, subsequent to regeneration. Sanctification is God\u2019s provision for dealing with our carnal nature through Christ purifying our minds, hearts, will, and bodies.<\/p>\n

Sanctification is definite and instantaneous. This refers to\u00a0a spiritual awareness in time when we surrender fully to Christ. As N.J. Holmes wrote in his book God\u2019s Provision <\/em>for Holiness <\/em>in 1902: \u201cThe crucifixion (of our flesh) will not take long when we are ready to submit to it. It may\u00a0take us some time to get ready for the cross.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is important that we be clear about the meaning of the phrase \u201cwork of grace.\u201d It is not about our work; it is about the work of Christ. We\u00a0surrender\u2014God sanctifies! We receive sanctification the same way we receive pardon and justification, by faith in Christ\u2019s work in our behalf.<\/p>\n

This is why the holy life is about joy, peace, love and hope in Christ. It is not about legalism, judgmental\u00a0attitudes, spiritual defeat and hopelessness. This is why the IPHC identified \u201cThe Beauty of Holiness\u201d a core value\u00a0and focus. This phrase, the beauty of holiness, occurs in 1 Chronicles 16:29; 2 Chronicles\u00a020:21; Psalm 29:2; and Psalm 96:9. It describes the glory, honor and adornment of the Lord. Throughout this year and beyond, insights from these passages, as well as from the totality of Scripture, will help us on this journey with our holy God.<\/p>\n

I am convinced that our witness to Jesus Christ must be rooted in holy living. I mean this in two ways. First, the beauty of holiness invites us to exhibit holiness as the body of Christ, the church, living holy in the world. While holiness and sanctification denotes separation from the world, it is not isolation from the world.<\/p>\n

Our separation unto Christ as His body, prepares us to live\u00a0the midst of this confused, hurting and hell-bent world. As a movement, my prayer is that the Holy Spirit will birth in us a corporate sense of holiness, which speaks to every aspect of our witness in the world.<\/p>\n

Second, holiness needs to be viewed as a significant element in evangelism. The apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 7:14 speaks of the power of a believing spouse to sanctify an entire family. In the most intimate\u00a0of human relationships, marriage and children, holiness is greater than unbelief! I believe this is true across the social needs of our world.<\/p>\n

The beauty of holiness is greater than immorality, greater than injustice, greater than human trafficking. It is greater than hunger, racism and greed. The beauty of holiness is greater than any corruption\u00a0of sin. In the light of that beauty, the corruption that is in the world is seen for the devastation it is, and this beauty draws people to Christ. May the body of Jesus Christ arise with joyful and life-giving holiness as a witness to this dying\u00a0world!<\/p>\n

Temed en su presencia, toda la tierra \"(NVI). El IISP ha optado por centrarse este a\u00f1o en \"La belleza de la santidad.\" A partir de la Escritura descubrimos la santidad de Dios, como Dios nos hace santos, lo que significa para nosotros ser santo y c\u00f3mo la gente santa compartir el amor de Dios en este mundo. Como escribi\u00f3 NJ Holmes en su libro La provisi\u00f3n de Dios<\/em> para la santidad<\/em> en 1902: \"La crucifixi\u00f3n (de nuestra carne) no pasar\u00e1 mucho tiempo cuando estamos dispuestos a someterse a \u00e9l. Nos puede tomar alg\u00fan tiempo para prepararse para la cruz \"Es importante que seamos claros sobre el significado de la frase\" obra de la gracia \"No se trata de nuestro trabajo..; se trata de la obra de Cristo. Nos rendimos-Dios santifica! Nosotros recibimos la santificaci\u00f3n de la misma manera en que recibimos el perd\u00f3n y la justificaci\u00f3n, por la fe en la obra de Cristo en nuestro favor. Esta es la raz\u00f3n por la vida santa se trata de la alegr\u00eda, la paz, el amor y la esperanza en Cristo. No se trata de legalismo, las actitudes cr\u00edticas, la derrota espiritual y desesperanza. Esta es la raz\u00f3n por la IISP identific\u00f3 \"La belleza de la santidad\" un valor central y el foco. Esta frase, la belleza de la santidad, se produce en 1 Cr\u00f3nicas 16:29; 2 Cr\u00f3nicas 20:21; Salmo 29: 2; y el Salmo 96: 9. En \u00e9l se describe la gloria, el honor y el adorno del Se\u00f1or. A lo largo de este a\u00f1o y m\u00e1s all\u00e1, las percepciones de estos pasajes, as\u00ed como de la totalidad de la Escritura, nos ayudar\u00e1n en este viaje con nuestro santo Dios. Estoy convencido de que nuestro testimonio de Jesucristo debe tener sus ra\u00edces en la vida santa. Me refiero a esto de dos maneras. En primer lugar, la belleza de la santidad nos invita a exhibir la santidad como el cuerpo de Cristo, la iglesia, la vida santa en el mundo. Mientras que la santidad y la santificaci\u00f3n marca la separaci\u00f3n del mundo, no es el aislamiento del mundo. Nuestra separaci\u00f3n a Cristo como su cuerpo, nos prepara para vivir medio de esta confusa, haciendo da\u00f1o y el mundo empe\u00f1ado. Como movimiento, mi oraci\u00f3n es que el Esp\u00edritu Santo va a nacer en nosotros un sentido corporativo de la santidad, que se dirige a todos los aspectos de nuestro testimonio en el mundo. En segundo lugar, la santidad tiene que ser visto como un elemento importante en la evangelizaci\u00f3n. El ap\u00f3stol Pablo en 1 Corintios 07:14 habla del poder de un c\u00f3nyuge creyente para santificar a toda una familia. En la m\u00e1s \u00edntima de las relaciones humana, el matrimonio y los ni\u00f1os, la santidad es mayor que la incredulidad! Creo que esto es cierto en las necesidades sociales de nuestro mundo. La belleza de la santidad es mayor que la inmoralidad, mayor que la injusticia, mayor que la trata de personas. Es mayor que el hambre, el racismo y la codicia. La belleza de la santidad es mayor que cualquier corrupci\u00f3n del pecado. A la vista de que la belleza, la corrupci\u00f3n que hay en el mundo es visto por la devastaci\u00f3n que es, y esta belleza atrae a la gente a Cristo. Que el cuerpo de Jesucristo surgir con la santidad de toda la vida dando alegre y como testigo de este mundo agonizante!
