During the first four months of 2016 the IPHC focus is on \u201cThe Source of Holiness: God.\u201d In this column I want to continue that emphasis by focusing on the eternal Son of God, Jesus, the \u201conly\u00a0begotten of the Father\u201d (John 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18; 1 John 4:9), who is the \u201cfullness\u201d of the revelation of the Father\u2019s will, character, and being (see John 1:16; Ephesians 1:23; 3:19; 4:13; Colossians 1:10; 2:9).\u00a0The spirit of the world wants us to discover, know and experience God but without reference to Jesus Christ. That approach manifests itself as \u201cthe spirit of Antichrist.\u201d The biblical descriptions of this spirit and the coming historical figure known as \u201cantichrist\u201d are found in 2 Thessalonians 2:3-12 and the letters of the Apostle John (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3; 2 John 1:7).<\/p>\n

This spirit, which has always operated in the world but especially since the incarnation of Jesus Christ, is characterized by rejecting that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah of Israel and the Son of God. The New Testament makes it very clear that the confession that Jesus is the Son of God is essential to the core of Christian Faith and to salvation.\u00a0Let\u2019s examine how the New Testament reveals the holiness of Jesus and what that holiness means for us.<\/p>\n

First, Jesus was \u201cconceived by the Holy Spirit\u201d in the womb of the Virgin Mary (Matthew 1:18, 20; Luke 1:30-35). Thus the holiness of the eternal Son of God, who existed before creation and by whom all things are created (Colossians 1:15, 16; Hebrews 1:2, 3), is made clear by the very act of conception. Jesus, the Son of God becomes the Son of Man for our sake.\u00a0His holiness is known in the earliest days of His life when brought before Simeon in the Temple to be dedicated to the Lord. This presentation, reflecting back to Exodus 13:2, recalls that this child, like all first-born males, is \u201ccalled holy to the Lord\u201d (Luke 2:23). Jesus is the fulfillment of that prophetic holiness revealed to Israel.<\/p>\n

Second, while the word \u201choly\u201d is not used in the temptations of\u00a0Jesus, the fundamental issue relates to Jesus\u2019 identity as the Son of God (Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13). This was Satan\u2019s attempt to turn Jesus as he did Adam and Eve in the Garden (Genesis 3). By His holy call and character, Jesus of Nazareth over a 40-day period rejected the various temptations of Satan, all of which were based on misunderstandings and manipulation of the clear Word of God.<\/p>\n

Third, in the Gospels unclean spirits discern that Jesus is \u201cthe Holy One of God.\u201d Mark 1:24 and Luke 4:34 reveal that before people recognized Jesus, the powers of darkness recognized Him and were terrified of His power and\u00a0had to submit to His authority.<\/p>\n

Fourth, Jesus\u00a0\u201csanctified\u201d Himself \u201cthat they (the disciples, including us) also may be sanctified by the truth\u201d (John 17:19). In verse 17 Jesus revealed that it is the Word of God, the truth, that sanctifies us.<\/p>\n

Fifth, Acts 2:27 quoting Psalm 16:10, affirmed that God\u2019s \u201cHoly One\u201d will not \u201csee corruption in the grave.\u201d In other words, though Jesus\u2019 body was bruised, pierced, and bloody on the cross, when He died Satan was not able to initiate corruption against His flesh. The triumph of the resurrection, by the \u201cSpirit of holiness\u201d (Romans 1:4), was God\u2019s redemptive triumph over all that Satan stole in the Garden.<\/p>\n

Sixth, in Paul\u2019s letters he recognizes that the church, the Body of the risen Lord, \u201cis a holy temple,\u201d \u201choly and without blemish\u201d (Ephesians 2:21; 5:27).\u00a0This is an amazing statement given what we know and experience about ourselves, the members of Christ\u2019s body.\u00a0We \u201chave this treasure in earthen vessels,\u201d Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:7, to a body of believers that by most standards were anything\u00a0but holy. Yet, because of the all- surpassing holiness of Jesus, the church is nonetheless a holy reality in anticipation of the full revelation of the glory of God.\u00a0This is why Paul\u2019s statement in 1 Corinthians 1:30-31 is so important.\u00a0Jesus \u201cbecame for us wisdom\u00a0from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, that as it is written, \u2018He\u00a0who glories, let him glory in the Lord.\u2019\u201d This is why\u00a0Jesus continues to work in\u00a0His church, sanctifying and\u00a0washing us for His glory (Ephesians 5:26).\u00a0This is why we, as members of the Body of Christ around the world and through the generations, do not exalt ourselves or glorify ourselves. We exist in this world to glorify God through our Holy Lord Jesus Christ!<\/p>\n

Seventh, Revelation 3:7 and 6:10 remind us that the Lord of history, Jesus, is \u201choly and true.\u201d There is a \u201cright side of history.\u201d But it is not determined by the self-will of politicians, economists or anyone else. It is determined by the One who is \u201cHoly and true.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, Hebrews 2:10-18 reminds us of the great mission of Jesus as He brings \u201cmany sons to glory.\u201d Jesus is the \u201ccaptain of [our] salvation\u201d because \u201cboth He\u00a0who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one.\u201d This is why Jesus \u201cis not ashamed to call [us] brethren!\u201d\u00a0He declares to the Father, \u201cHere am I and the children whom God has given me\u201d (Hebrews 2:13\/Isaiah 8:18).<\/p>\n

The source of holiness is not some theological abstraction known as \u201cGod.\u201d Our source, Jesus, has \u201cshared in our flesh and blood, that through death He might destroy Him who had the power of death, that is, the devil\u201d (Hebrews 2:14). That is the good news that we have received and that we share with the world!<\/p>\n

En esta columna quiero seguir ese \u00e9nfasis, centr\u00e1ndose en el eterno Hijo de Dios, Jes\u00fas, el \"unig\u00e9nito del Padre\" ( Juan 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18; 1 Juan 4: 9), que es la \"plenitud\" de la revelaci\u00f3n de la voluntad del Padre, el car\u00e1cter y el ser (ver Juan 1:16; Efesios 1:23; 3:19; 4:13; Colosenses 1:10; 2: 9). El esp\u00edritu del mundo quiere que nosotros descubrimos, conocer y experimentar a Dios, pero sin hacer referencia a Jesucristo. \". En quinto lugar, Hechos 2:27 citando el Salmo 16:10, afirm\u00f3 que \"el Santo\" de Dios no se \"vea corrupci\u00f3n en la tumba.\" En otras palabras, aunque el cuerpo de Jes\u00fas fue molido, perforado, y con sangre en la cruz, cuando \u00c9l muri\u00f3 Satan\u00e1s no fue capaz de iniciar la corrupci\u00f3n en contra de su carne. El triunfo de la resurrecci\u00f3n, por el \"Esp\u00edritu de santidad\" (Romanos 1: 4), fue el triunfo redentor de Dios sobre todo lo que Satan\u00e1s rob\u00f3 en el jard\u00edn. En sexto lugar, en las cartas de Pablo reconoce que la iglesia, el Cuerpo del Se\u00f1or resucitado, \"es un templo santo\", \"santa y sin mancha\" (Efesios 2:21; 5:27). Existimos en este mundo para glorificar a Dios por medio de nuestro Se\u00f1or Jesucristo, Santo! En s\u00e9ptimo lugar, Apocalipsis 3: \". Santo y verdadero\" 7 y 6:10 nos recuerda que el Se\u00f1or de la historia, Jes\u00fas, es que hay una \". Lado correcto de la historia\" Pero no est\u00e1 determinada por la propia voluntad de los pol\u00edticos, economistas o cualquier otra persona. Est\u00e1 determinada por Aquel que es Finalmente, Hebreos 2 \"Santo y verdadero.\": \".
