Day 2:
Half Day (morning) Ahu Tahai, Aku Akivi, and Puna Pau
In the morning you’ll leave the hotel for a half-day tour. The first stop, Ahu Tahai (ahu is the local word for the great bases which the moais stand upon), is a short distance from Hanga Roa. There are several moais here and the main one, which guards a cave house, still has its eyes and topknot intact. The next stop is the Sebastian Englert Anthropological Museum which has good descriptions of island life. From there you’ll move inland to the site of Ahu Akivi, the home of seven great moais, and the only ones left on the island today that face the sea. Before returning to Hanga Roa, you’ll make the journey to the Puna Pau crater where evidence of the carving of the moais distinctive red topknots can be seen.

Half Day (afternoon) Vinapu, Rano Kao, and Orongo
In the afternoon you’ll depart for a second tour: the first stop is Vinapu, the site of two large ahus. Anyone who may have seen Peru’s Machu Picchu or other Inca ruins will not fail to be amazed by the masonry of Vinapu’s main ahu. The next stop is Rano Kao, a cauldron of a crater where the interesting Orongo ruins can be seen, as well as a lake with many reed islands. A final stop will be made at Orongo itself, one of the island’s most important settlements and the home of the bird man cult. There are also many ruins and petroglyphs found here.

There are more than 600 figures standing and lying around the area, and inside the crater there is a silent reedy lake and an amphitheater full of handsome heads; Ahu Tongariki, the most stunning in scale and location, where fifteen moais line up side by side; Ahu Te Pito Kura, home to a 10m-high moai which lies fallen with its neck broken; Anakena Beach, the legendary landing place of Hotu Matu and the island’s only accessible white sand beach. This is also the location of the picture perfect moais of Ahu Nau Nau and Ahu Ature Huki.
