Julio Areas, the General Superintendent of Nicaragua, recently had an operation on his eyes to correct and restore vision. His condition started with cataracts in one eye, then the loss of illumination in both eyes. Julio mentioned that “it’s like having sand in his eyes;” sounds very painful and uncomfortable.
His conditions make driving difficult, especially at night. Julio serves as the People to People Administrator for his country, and works every year to prepare updates on the children. The severity of the situation was confirmed by doctors in the US, but the surgery would have cost around $10,000 to perform. In Nicaragua the surgery was $3,000.
