Southwestern Christian University concluded its 70th Anniversary Homecoming Celebration Saturday, Nov. 5.
The festivities kicked off Thursday, Nov. 3, with Holy Spirit Night. The service took place in Minchew Auditorium and featured guest speakers Dr. Leroy Baker(former SCU President) and Justin Blankenship (’03 alumnus). The even also included worship led by David Oxley Sr. and One Voice.
Dr. Baker also received the Lifetime Achievement Award during the event.
Friday, Nov. 4, saw the Southwestern Showcase in Minchew Auditorium followed by a tailgate party in front of Pickens-Springer Gymnasium sponsored by SCU Baseball and a pep rally preceding the homecoming basketball game between the SCU men and Central Methodist (Mo.) During halftime of the game, SCU crowned its Homecoming King and Queen. Senior Jacob Spencer, of Azle, Texas, was named King, and Meredith Light, a senior from Rolla, Kan., was named queen.
Saturday, Nov. 5, was kicked off by the Alumni and Friends Breakfast followed by the Singing Reunion in Minchew Auditorium. The Singing Reunion was hosted by Bishop Randall Drake and highlighted by performances from Great Life and One Voice.
Former Eagles and Lady Eagles returned to the SCU hardwood for the men’s and women’s basketball alumni games later in the afternoon. The SCU women’s basketball team followed the alumni games with its home opener against Bethel (Kan.). Click here for a recap of the women’s basketball game.
The weekend was capped by the annual Homecoming Banquet and Feast of Ingathering at the Jim Poteet Conference Center. [Conferences across the states raised over $28,000 for Feast of Ingathering.] During the banquet SCU honored Dr. Ron Moore with the Dan Beller Legacy Award.
Josh Gamblin and Shandra Youell were honored with the Alumnus and Alumna of the Year.
Joe Blackwell was given the President’s Commendation for his efforts in helping build the SCU Baseball Complex.
Dr. Terry Tramel received the Spiritual Impact Award.
Late SCU track and field coach Paul Parent was the 10th inductee in to the SCU Athletic Hall of Fame. For more on Parent, click here.
