Warren W. Wiersbe, a former pastor of the Moody Church and general director of Back to the Bible, traveled widely as a Bible teacher and conference speaker. Because of his encouragement to those in ministry, Dr. Wiersbe was often referred to as “the pastor’s pastor.” He ministered in churches and conferences throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Central and South America, and Europe. Dr. Wiersbe wrote over 150 books, including the popular BE series of commentaries on every book of the Bible, which has sold more than four million copies. He went to be with the Lord on May 2, 2019.
Like Abel, Warren Wiersbe, being dead yet speaks. In Something Happens When Churches Pray, he digs into the Book of Acts to show the importance of a praying church. Wiersbe examines the impact a body of believers can make when they combine prayer with God’s Word. He surveys a number of the more than 30 references to prayer recorded in the Book of Acts. I found this little volume to be especially helpful in my 32 years of pastoral ministry, returning to its pages again and again for teaching, preaching, and personal application. It was especially useful in my succession teaching as I was transitioning out of the pastorate into my current role as Director of IPHC Men’s Ministries. Wiersbe’s insights into the church and prayer helped me and the Buena Vista Pentecostal Holiness Church, Buena Vista, VA to transition well into a new season of life and ministry. I highly commend this little book to any pastor, preacher, teacher, or Christian desiring more insight into the role of prayer and the Word in the early church with a 21st Century application.
