Bishop Leon Stewart, the 11th General Superintendent of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church, was born on December 5, 1929, in Pineville, Florida. Today, the IPHC family honors him and wishes him a happy 90th birthday!
A son of a Pentecostal Holiness minister, Bishop Stewart came to know the Lord in 1947 and quickly accepted the call to ministry. He was ordained in the Alabama Conference (Alpha Conference) in 1952. While attending Holmes Bible College in Greenville, South Carolina, he met Donna Dooley and they were married in September of the same year. The Stewarts pastored several churches in the Alabama Conference and also served as Christian Education director and conference superintendent.
In 1969, Bishop Stewart began his service to the IPHC at the General level as assistant general superintendent, director of Evangelism, and vice chariman before he was elected general superintendent in 1981. Under his leadership, the denomination launched the Target 2000 church growth initiative and began prayer meetings which led to the launching of the IPHC’s prayer initiative, World Intercession Network (WIN). After retirement, Bishop Stewart moved back to Alabama with “Miss Donna.”
Presiding Bishop Doug Beacham shares, “I am thankful that the Lord gave us Bishop Stewart as a leader, preacher, and writer in the IPHC. Several times a year I have the joy of speaking with him, and I’m always encouraged. Susan and I pray that he will have a wonderful 90th birthday celebration and that the Lord will give him many more!”
