In November 2022 IPHC Pastor Mike Pickett contacted me with this question: “Hey Bishop, would you recommend Pentecostal Theology books that you like?” His question gives me an opportunity to share with many of you some of the books that I have found most useful in this field. It is certainly not exhaustive and many of you will add to the recommendations.
Here are some books that I think would benefit you and I have not listed them in any priority. They are available on amazon.com or the publisher. Many are available in a Kindle edition.
- You can find a list of IPHC authors and their books at https://iphc.org/gso/publications/. You will find good resources there and we attempt to update that list as we learn of new books.
- Scriptural Holiness, Noel Brooks, a premier British IPHC theologian.
- From Passover to Pentecost, Bishop Joseph H. King. One of the earliest IPHC leaders and theologians, this book by King is the template for IPHC approach to justification by faith, sanctification, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
- The Beauty of the Balance: Toward an Evangelical-Pentecostal Theology, Dr. Terry Tramel. A contemporary analysis of IPHC theological construct.
- Light for the Journey, Doug Beacham. A study of the IPHC Articles of Faith for ministerial candidates and laity.
- Plugged In To God’s Power, Doug Beacham. A study of the Holy Spirit in the life of the follower of Christ and in the church.
- Christian Doctrine: A Pentecostal Perspective (3 Volumes), French Arrington. A Church of God scholar, this series provides a good overview of Pentecostal theology.
- The Century of the Holy Spirit: 100 Years of Pentecostal and Charismatic Renewal, Vinson Synan. Synan remains the premier IPHC historian.
- Who is the Holy Spirit? A Walk with the Apostles, Amos Yong.
- The Many Faces of Global Pentecostalism, edited by Harold D. Hunter, Neil Ormerod.
- Toward a Pentecostal Theology of Religions: Encountering Cornelius Today, Tony Richie.
- Essentials of Pentecostal Theology: An Eternal and Unchanging Lord Powerfully Present and Active by the Holy Spirit, Tony Richie and Steven Jack Land.
- Living in the Spirit: The Way of Salvation, R. Hollis Gause.
